Tommy sat not but one inch away from the television set in the living room of his home. He was only in kindergarten, but he was already crossing his fingers and wishing for a snow day like all the other kids across Mcklenburg county. The smell of grits and sausage that came from the kitchen earlier had already begun to fade. It was 7:45am and school started at 8:00am on the dot. Tommy’s mother was rushing around the house gathering his thing since he refused to move from his spot in front of the television since 7:00 that morning. “Tohmas lets go! You’re going to be late! The snow is already going to slow things down” his mother yelled from the ktichen as she quickly placed his lunch box in his backpack and headed for the living room in which he still sat with his fingers crossed. She stood in the doorway now, looking at him practically going cross eyed. “Mommy please. Marcus said that we don’t have school if there is snow!” his eyes remained glued to the screen; 7:50am. Tommy’s mother looked across the room and out the window, a considerable amount of snow had fallen since the previous night. “Tommy sweetheart, if they haven’t announced it yet then school won’t-” she was interrupted by the news reporter on the television “I repeat, Mecklenburg county schools will be closed today due to snow.” Tommy jumped up hollering “Yahoo! Yay! No school!”. He dashed yup the stairs and quickly threw on his winter gear and practically tumbled down the stairs. His mother stared in dismay. “Tommy slow down! What are you doing?!” Tommy barely heard his mother as he grabbed his sled and ran outside. “Sledding with Marcus on the hill by the park!” and with that he flew out the door, leaving his mother with barely enough time to grab her coat “Tommy wait!”. Tommy ran down the snow covered street, his mother catching up with him. He sees Marcus at the bottom of the hill laying in the snow, wearing a red scarf and his puffy blue coat. He takes his sled and places it strategically on the ground, just as Tommy sits on the slid his mother grabs him. “Tommy wait.” she was out of breath and panting. Tommy, frustrated and inching to get down the hill, whines “Mommy Marcus is already at the bottom!”. His mother looks down the hill, her grip tightening on Tommy’s shoulder. “Tommy stay here.” she bolts down the hill towards Marcus. Ignoring his mothers instructions, Tommy pushes his sled over the edge and goes flying down the hill on his sled. He passes his mother in a rush. “TOMMY NO!”. Tommy’s sled hits a rock hidden beneath the snow and he tumbles on top of Marcus, giggling. Tommy sat up to share in his amusement with Marcus. Marcus laying in his red scarf, silently and unmoving.
The diner was empty save for a single booth in the corner. Maggie walked from behind the counter with a fresh pot of coffee, her name tag slightly crooked and stained with the lunch special from the rush that afternoon. It was always slower at night. Maybe a couple of truckers stopping for a late night meal on a long haul or a bunch of drunken teenagers looking for something to quail their drunken hunger pains. However, there was always a man who came every night and sat in the last booth in the corner of the diner. He wasn’t a trucker and he definitely wasn’t a drunk teenager. He had various streaks of grey hair peaking their way through the darkness of his short black hair that lay untamed on his head; a matching mustache on his upper lip. The expression on his face was always calm but his body seemed to always be very tense and stiff. A note pad lay on the table to his right, that night the notebook was a deep blue. Maggie had seen him with a different notebook every month or so, always vigorously scribbling on it after his second cup of coffee but never after eating his hash browns. He was a creature of very strange and interesting habits. The waitresses nicknamed him “Poe” because in the two years he had been a regular customer, not once did he reveal his name, he just sat in the last booth with his dark hair and mustache and scribbled away into an endless amount of notebooks grimly. As Maggie made her way across the empty diner, hot coffee pot in hand, she noticed something different about Poe, the gold band that once rested on his ring finger was now gone. It had always stuck out against the cheap brown diner tables. As she poured his second cup of coffee, she wondered to herself if she should say something to comfort him. It wasn’t as if they were close friends, after two years they were still strangers, maybe it would have been strange to comfort a person with whom she had no real connection. Just the sounds of a knife going across a plate as he cut through his pancakes and coffee being poured, that was their nightly conversation.
It was always a strange feeling for Noire to be in a body other than his own, which he had hoped in the beginning would change as time went on, but six years later and it still felt like diving into the ocean at chilling temperatures. The feeling usually began in his head, like thousands of tiny needles prickling him one by one all the way down until he was finally greeted by a rush of warmth, on few occasions the heat felt like it would melt him from the inside. However, this particular body had proved to be not much of a challenge to initially inhabit. Ms. Delvoir was the wife of a very high up politician who was rumored to be in association with the UIB, the Unatural Investigation Bureau. Ms. Delvoir, also known as Shari, was a very slender woman but not by nature, which is what made her an easy target for Noire. Overtime, a person’s soul becomes bound to their body, that is unless the body is altered and then the soul has to once again become familiar with the new body it has been given. Since Ms. Devoire visits the surgeon like other women visit nail salons, it was very easy for Noire’s soul to dominate hers. It had been a gift he had been born with, or as the orphanage had seen it, a curse. It was the result of being inter-specie. Three decades ago, Russian scientist had made contact with other life forms outside of the planet. From there another space race between nations raged on. The planet was called Fereq, as named by it’s native people. The United states was the first to reach the planet and set up an inter galaxtic program in which the Fereqians were able to travel to the United States and perform non- evasive scientific studies while in return Amrericans, mainly scientist and the extremely wealthy, would come and conduct non-evasive scientific research or stay as welcomed guests. Not all went well, since the other nations of the world were ready to begin a war with the United States and the planet of Fereq. In an attempt to calm the other nations, Fereq generously offered a single female from their great planet to each of the nations.
